Well not really, but this post is here to discuss 5 ways that your are sabotaging your healthy lifestyle journey. In another post I will take time to discuss how we can correct these simple “journey mishaps”.
Okay, let’s get into it!
We have now approached the season where we want to eat lots of yummy food and spend time with family. Holidays were not created yesterday and if we want to continue being successful on our journeys then we need to develop habits to help us make it through the holidays. I have created these practices throughout the time I have been on this healthy lifestyle journey and I wanted to share with you all. (more…)
I challenge everyone to look in your fridge/freezer, pantry, cabinet, etc and ask yourself, what does my food say about me? I could remember before I embarked on this journey to lose weight (and when I was a meat eater) I loved a double “baconator” with extra bacon and mayo. Now when I look back and also consider other foods I normally consumed my food then said about me “artery clogging”. I am always asked “what do you eat”?
It hit me like a ton of bricks to write this; while I am living, moving and shaking in the world I hear it all (when it comes to weight loss). The things that I hear often make me cringe because those individuals are actually doing more harm than good. So I just wanted to take a moment to bust some MYTHS and give you the REAL DEAL.
In the land of weight loss this can sometime be a huge hurdle (Staying CONSISTENT), and most of the time the number one factor for giving up. I am often asked how do you remain so consistent or some reach out and state they are having trouble with staying on track. Everyone is very different in terms of what allows them to remain consistent, however I will list a few practices that I follow that may help you all.
In the beginning I rid myself of dining out, there was no such thing as “moderation” I was only interested in building DISCIPLINE. My friends at the time knew that I was on this healthy lifestyle journey therefor for some time they knew not to even call and ask “hey, Applebee’s has specials, would you like to go’? Dining out was an issue for me so in the beginning that was a challenge I needed to attack.
It was the scariest thing ever, I decided to go to the fitness center and run on the treadmill. simply because it was winter and dark (I didn’t want to run outside in the dark at night). I did about 3 miles which is nothing out of the ordinary, however I started to feel “weird”. Then I began to feel faint, I hopped off the treadmill to go home, once I got outside (in the cold) I felt hot and started shaking (so bad to the point I could barely walk). I sat down to gather myself and I was honestly afraid (this had never happened).
Probably within the last year or more I became this water junkie, prior to I could barely get through one 16 oz. bottle of water a day. During that time I was still drinking sports drinks and limited juice and I must admit from time to time I was making Kool aid *covers eyes* lol. It was hard for me to consume water because number 1 I hated the taste (it was bland and not satisfying) and I truly didn’t understand the benefit of consuming. Water aides in digestion, weight loss (it contributes to a flat belly), detox toxins throughout the body and also allows your organs to function properly. In knowing this water was still nasty to me; however once I realized how crucial water intake was to my healthy lifestyle journey I got on board with it.
While some sit home during the cold winter months and eat comfort food; I still run in 20 degree weather and continue to eat clean. What is hard for me is keeping that up during the summer months and it’s not so much about running (because I’m still very active) it is the food that gets me.
I am always thankful for social media, Instagram is how I came across Jennifer’s Instagram ( + we also share a mutual friend). Last December I attended her event A night of neurology and it was great. I am thankful for Jennifer’s interview it was definitely a learning experience for me (being that I knew very little about Epilepsy). I believe it is GREAT that Jennifer is providing education and raising awareness on Epilepsy. She always has my support and I am hoping that she will have yours as well.
I sometimes laugh (for good reason) when I take a look in my home and the food items that are there, it was not even three years ago when my home was FILLED with processed foods. For me in my journey when I go grocery shopping there are FIVE must have items that I always have to have. I wanted to share because these staple foods are very beneficial in my healthy lifestyle journey; unless you are allergic I would definitely recommend giving them a try.
1. Apples: In trying to kick my addiction to bananas (because they are high in sugar and I would consume many a DAY), fruits and veggies serve a lot of nutritional benefits. For apples they have a good amount of fiber, lower risk for diabetes, control weight loss etc. As we know there are many different types of apples and their sugar contents are different, but for the most part they carry the same benefits.
2. Natural peanut butter: I love, love, love peanut butter. Simply because it’s a great way to curb sugar cravings and it goes great with apples.
3. Almonds: These are my favorite energy food however aside from that; almonds lower bad cholesterol and they are considered to be a “good” fat.
4. Zucchini: I have recently within the past year, must have these in stock in my home. One, you can create so many different dishes with zucchini and they are not expensive at all (we know produce sometimes can be). Zucchini is packed with anti-oxidants; provide potassium and great in cholesterol reduction.
5. Eggs: I love the protein that eggs provide; they are also good for increasing HDL levels (good cholesterol), they also aide in losing weight and provide many nutrients. Eggs are one of those items you can consumer in the morning or also for a snack. Throughout my journey I love foods that can serve many different purposes and easy to cook.
Now some of you all may be reading this and state, that you do like the items listed or you may be allergic. There are many different clean food items that provide the same or even more nutritional value, I would suggest researching and exploring. However when I think about my must haves and what has been loyal to me throughout my journey those listed above is it. If you are able to consume these items I highly suggest making them a part of your daily eating habits. Please feel free to comment below on some of your clean must haves. PEACE, LOVE & GRACE!
I strongly believe in order for you to succeed at some things in life there needs to be a plan, structure, and an end game. Looking back on my journey (from beginning until now) I can definitely say that there should be some planning to this healthy lifestyle journey. For most it may look like things happened pretty fast for me however even before I began there was some thought and processes to it all. I didn’t just wake up one day and go full force (typically this how you FAIL quickly). Let’s get into 5 ways to jumpstart your journey!
I would like thank Anthony for giving me the opportunity of featuring him on I2C. I met him yearssssssss ago (when I use to party hard) lol. He is such a humble and down to earth person. Throughout the years I have watched him achieve so many great things and I have definitely been inspired. Now Let’s get to it!
Last week I posted a question on Instagram, Facebook and twitter on what is the biggest hindrance that we face in living a healthy lifestyle. I got many different answers however the main two were “I don’t have time” and also just others not really believing they could achieve. I did address the time aspect on my radio show this past weekend called the Balancing act, but I wanted to let this post address how we speak to ourselves.
Since the beginning of my journey until now I have went from permed to natural, short, medium and now being bald length hair. Hair can be a reason (excuse) for lack of working out especially if you are like I was that would spend so much money into maintaining my tresses. It can become frustrating when you spend money and take so much time to do your hair for it to last through one work out. When working out the first thing to sweat is my HEAD (so for me this was a real pain). I wanted to write this post just to help some of you ladies out on how to maintain your hair REGARDLESS of texture, length or style.
I have always felt that losing your tummy is the easiest; I am not stating that because I have done it but the method to tackling belly fat is very simple. Among women this has been the ultimate question that I have gotten for years and decided to share some tips on how to blast belly fat.
I am slowly approaching my 3 year anniversary of my healthy lifestyle, It’s crazy (to me). I am always writing about how to lose and living healthy, but I would like to take some time and discuss HOW to maintain weight loss. I have seen and worked with so many individuals who had done great and then gain it all + more back. I will be providing some tips that have helped me out consistently over the years.
I am always excited when I come across others and their healthy lifestyle journeys. I am also open to sharing with you all to let you know and witness that everyone is not the same and its completely okay. I have been following Lorri for a while now actually to go back, last summer I “met” her at a party (we didn’t know each other). The next day her transformation was featured on Instagram and I followed her. I was blown away because the person I saw 24 hours prior I would have never known her transformation. I am thankful that Lorri decided to share her journey with myself and you all today.
First, let me thank Russ Terry so much for taking the time to do this interview with me. Russ Terry is a certified life coach and the CEO/FOUNDER of Life Coach Radio Network (In which you all know I’m a radio show host there as well). I came across Russ one evening when I was watching Paul C. Brunson #MentorMonday where Russ was on the HOPE panel. I followed Russ on twitter, I also purchased his book (this info will be discussed below) and we have just grown from there. Russ has been a HUGE inspiration to me and I hope that this interview will inspire you all as well.
Earlier last week I came across this article on clean eating and development of eating disorders, there were some points I could relate too. I wrote a post a time ago titled “I almost saw a therapist” because in the middle stages of journey I became obsessed. I was obsessed with counting every single calorie, weighing myself like every day, and there was even a time I would look in the mirror and just examine my body to see if it LOOKED like I gain weight.
Whether you have started your journey and realized you hit a plateau or just starting and can’t drop the pounds, there is always a reason for EVERYTHING. I remember losing about 50 pounds and everything just STOPPED (which was frustrating) because to that point my journey was moving along nicely.
Most of us (not all) but most are not very confident prior to our healthy lifestyle journey and it will not get any easier once you lose weight. We live in a world that many believe that once you are a certain size that your world is “PERFECT” but in reality you have to build confidence.
When I began my journey I wasn’t really big on practicing this in regards to what I’m going to share with you all and I don’t have to do it often because I eat real food. Within the past year I have become a food label reading addict. I don’t read to really know sodium, fat intake as much as I am concerned with ingredients. A lot of the times you may believe that is natural peanut butter or this may be a great healthy snack and it’s NOT. From just observing clean eating is on the rise (which is a good thing) however companies know that and what they also know is that majority are not really in the habit or educated on nutrition.
If you have attended “Let’s get physical” then you are familiar with this woman. April TheWorkoutDiva Washington is my business parted turned friend and amazing trainer. I wanted to highlight April’s healthy lifestyle journey to show that we are all very different in our journey. April loves to dance and workout and I focus on clean eating (so together we make a pretty awesome team).
It doesn’t matter how confident you are, we as humans always have our days. Every day during my journey even I have my days now I may not like my body, I sometimes find myself thinking maybe I should lose more weight or I have been in a place where I felt as though I looked too small. So I am here to give tips on how to love you through the journey.
When you entered school as a child; we had to learn to write letters before putting them together and forming words which allowed us to then do something called reading. If you are married before you said I do, you had to get to know that individual through developing a friendship, Boyfriend/girlfriend, becoming engaged then married. With learning math you didn’t learn division first before anything we were taught what 1+1 equals.
So why is it that we believe we can achieve weight loss and live a healthier lifestyle and put in NO work?
When I was running MlifeBlog I followed Troy on twitter (months ago), his tweets were so REAL. I remember tweeting him “we are going to work together one day”. Lol! It is so funny to me now that we are working together(I’m thankful that he took the time to do this feature). I believe healthy relationships are an important factor for a healthy lifestyle. One thing I appreciate about Troy’s writing is that he is very transparent and that makes him very RELATABLE.
If you have read any previous blog post as I was formerly known as “MLifeBlog” then you are familiar with feature Fridays. This will happen every Friday, I want to be able to give you all other resources that benefit your well being. Living a healthy lifestyle is not only about weight loss, If you have any suggestions or topics you like to read more about please comment below. Now for the first feature friday on I2C……
Ladies if we can take time to sit in the nail shop or men if you can go to the sports bar with friends then we definitely have time to meal prep. The number 1 reason I hear for not meal prepping is “I dont have time”, In reality we all make time for things that are important to us. Our health should be top PRIORITY!
I remember years ago and even currently people are amazed when they ask “what do you do to lose weight” and I respond “I eat clean and walk/run”. They cant believe it or laugh because it seems too easy to just only walk/run to lose weight. Well there is a reason we always look online or hear people say “80% nutrition, 20% physical” that is very true. You cannot eat whatever, however consistently and believe because you are in the gym two hours a day that weight will fall of. I knew when I began to lose weight almost 3 years ago, that I had to live a healthier lifestyle and for me that meant throwing away the junk and getting serious about eating properly. I do not like the gym so I knew I would not spend my mornings and nights there (so I began to walk). We always walk its a part of life however my weight loss has been a direct impact of clean eating, I make sure that I am getting enough; fiber, grains, fruit, veggies, lean meat, and water in my everyday diet. (more…)
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have witnessed my mini but professional rant on my frustration with “sneaking sugar in my food”. Yesterday, I was at the grocery store (as always) getting some last minute things for my meal prep and I found these chips. The chips had brown rice, quinoa, flax seeds etc ( I will not disclose brand, not to exploit but to educate) and on the front it was stickered “Gluten Free”. I was excited because everything seemed great; I then looked on the back at nutrition where it was like 0g of sugar (even more excited). I have become such a label/ingredient reading addict which lead me to find this ingredient “evaporated cane juice”, because I never saw this before (I don’t eat processed foods) so I had to pull out my phone and search Google. For one I don’t drink juice and two again I never heard of “cane juice”, basically several sources indicated that it’s basically SUGAR. I put the product back and continued on, however my gears started to turn.
I also within the past year started a new role at my job along with many life changes. Anyway y’all not here for all of that so let’s hop into it.
